Striking sculptures on show at St John’s Waterloo

New works by Morley sculpture students, staff and artists are on display at a free sculpture exhibition in the Churchyard Garden, St John’s Waterloo – created for the Waterloo Festival.

The sculptures have been produced over the last year in response to the Festival’s theme of ‘HERE’ are displayed in various sculptural materials such as ceramic, steel, lead and found objects on and around the front churchyard – responding to the stone plinths and surrounding trees. The garden sculptures will be displayed all summer until mid-September 2025.

Sheila Volmer, Head of Sculpture at Morley said ‘This exhibition is a wonderful opportunity for students to make works which are designed for a specific site and theme – and for staff who get to exhibit alongside the students. Sculptures on display include a work by a new student who has a piece hanging on a tree using a new welding technique; a work by tutor Steve Hodgson – the first time he’s made such a big piece which is site-specific…

We have amazing lead-cast children’s shoes on one of the lower plinths. And tutor Ben Swift has done an amazing found objects piece which he has called allium – they are like glass flowers that are hanging in the tree made of test tubes which he constructed together. These are just a few of the interesting works on display in the gardens.”

The exhibition is on now and open everyday from 8am and 8pm until Saturday 6th September 2025.
